3 Uncomfortable Conversations White Women Need to Have With Each Other
#KarenCanWeTalk
Dear T.R.I.B.E. Friends,
On Allies:
“The comrade is unlike the ally or the friend. Whereas allies support each other at a distance, across the boundaries of their experiences of oppression, comrades are equalized by being on the same side of a struggle.”
Jacobin Magazine
After devoting the last 30 years of my life to working, studying, worshipping, laughing, crying, grieving and fellowshipping in the African American community, I find myself in a very interesting position.
#CULTURALDECODING 101
To start, and with a great debt of thanks to #CodeswitchPodcast, Here are 4 versions of #whiteprivilege roles in women that keep us from being allies, and DEFINITELY rule out the comrade status:
4 Versions of #whiteprivilege
Miss Anne- Slang for white woman from era of slavery and Jim Crow, who is aware of her whiteness and the status attached to it. Complicit with it.
Scarlett- Southern belle, A version of Miss Anne- with green curtains as a ballgown in a pinch
Becky- Slang for white woman who is blissfully or willfully unaware of her whiteness but is complicit and guards her status
(Codeswitch say she may or may not be a #Valleygirl lol)
Karen-a woman, usually white- on the lookout for people of color and posting in Next Door about a “suspicious looking“ person. Demands to get into grocery store without a mask, polices nonwhite person’s (and other white person’s) behavior. Calls the police a lot.
Let’s be learners and healers and protectors of one another’s children. Let’s usher in a safe tomorrow…
Sending love across the quantum field,
Dr. Jane
